The ProgramBeneath the Surface is an 8-week foundational training led by Susan Chen for clinicians. Each week combines foundational readings, live teaching and mentorship from Susan, case-based learning, and group discussion, giving participants direct access to her nearly 20 years of experience working with children and families.
The training moves beyond theory into the realities of working with children, parents, and families. Participants build the ability to look past presenting behaviors and understand the relationships, histories, and emotional experiences underneath them: an inside look at the relational approach that defines Insight.

How children develop and communicate
Weeks 1-2

What happens within the therapeutic relationship

How children protect themselves, and how therapy helps
Weeks 7-8
How the parent's inner world enters treatment

Focus: How a mind develops within relationship
Key concepts: Early relational experience, mutual influence, attunement, mismatch and repair, implicit relational knowing, adaptation, relational expectations
Objectives: Understand development as a relational process, recognize children as active participants in relationships, and consider how repeated relational experiences shape expectations about self and others.
Guiding question: What has this child learned to expect from relationships?
